Defining Managers

What is a manager

Today the crucial resources of the economy and of the enterprises are knowledge, creativity and innovation. The managers represented by CEC are the binding elements and the mobilising forces of this ‘knowledge society’. Though legally considered as employees they are expected to take over management’s responsibility for the workers and for the development of the company.

Managers assume essential duties which involve a particularly high degree of responsibility, competence and professionalism in the management and implementation of corporate and institutional objectives. Leaders of this type share common sociological characteristics and interests. This is why the European Parliament expressly supported managers’ entitlement to a separate and independent representation not only on national but also on European level. This group of employees is steadily increasing with the continuing development of information and communications technologies and of new forms of labour organisation.

Managers have specific needs, interests and contributions to make. The representation of these interests can therefore neither be carried out by the traditional unions nor by the employers' federations but only by their own special professional federations. Being the European umbrella federation for professionals and executives CEC has made this task its own.
