Managers and leaders are key to turning citizens’ initiatives into European action

Managers and leaders have a vital role to play in helping European Citizens’ Initiatives (ECIs) move from mobilisation to real impact.

During the ECI Day (organised within the framowork of the Civil Society Week) at the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), CEC European Managers was proud to be present and to engage with a wide range of civil society organisations, institutional representatives and campaign organisers.

The event took place in the broader context of Civil Society Week 2026, which highlighted the growing role of organised civil society in strengthening democratic participation and shaping Europe’s future.

In workplaces, organisations and society at large, managers are often the link between ideas and implementation, between participation and delivery. Their capacity to organise, build consensus, lead change and turn commitments into practical results is a powerful asset for democratic initiatives across Europe.

Many valuable contacts were established during the week with civil society organisations from different sectors and countries. These discussions showed the strength of cross-sector dialogue and the importance of building alliances if citizens’ participation is to translate into credible and lasting policy outcomes.

CEC’s Pledge for a Climate Leadership was specially welcomed by other organisations from civil society, highlighting the importance of European leaders in companies to build bridges between policy and implementation.

The event itself underlined this momentum, with dynamic sessions, strong audience engagement and a clear emphasis on cooperation, shared responsibility and democratic resilience.

The interventions during the ECI discussions also showed that citizens across Europe are mobilising on a wide range of issues and expect institutions to respond seriously, transparently and consistently.

Speakers stressed that civic participation should contribute to real agenda-setting and meaningful follow-up. This is a message CEC European Managers strongly supports.

As a recognised EU social partner, CEC European Managers is committed to strengthening democracy at work and in society, promoting responsible leadership, and ensuring that the voice of managers is heard in the European debate.

Democratic resilience also depends on capable leadership: leadership that listens, connects stakeholders, and helps transform citizens’ aspirations into workable European solutions.

The workshops and exchanges held during the week further demonstrated that Europe needs stronger bridges between institutions, social partners, civil society and the world of work.

Séamus Boland, EESC President, said: “Europe’s successful democratic future depends on this work and I look forward to building on these efforts this year, in particular as we join the Civil Society Platform and its Steering Group and host the annual summit.’

CEC European Managers will continue to work with partners across Europe to promote participation, social dialogue and leadership that serves the common good.

Europe where citizens’ engagement should be matched by institutional responsibility, and where managers and leaders are recognised as part of the solution for delivering meaningful change.
